Support Microsoft for Publishing Correct Kashmir Map
Support Microsoft
Chief Executive Officer,
Microsoft Corporation
Dear Mr. Bill Gates,
I would like to communicate my support for your choice to publish
the map of disputed Kashmir in your MapPoint 2002 software that
is close to the position endorsed by the United Nations.
Your map appropriately depicts Kashmir as a disputed region, rather
than the Indian version of geography which asserts that Kashmir
is a sovereign state of India. The Indian version of Kashmir map
is certainly not supported by the U.N.
Kashmir belongs neither to Pakistan, nor to India, and its future
must be decided by the people of Kashmir themselves. In the last
ten years, more than 80,000 Kashmiris have died resisting the 700,000
strong Indian army in Kashmir. This is perhaps enough a reason for
us to consider Kashmir a disputed territory on our maps.
As a producer of highly acclaimed products that are used by both
lay people and professionals, it is your duty to project an accurate
and objective view of the world politics, geography and history.
Microsoft must be commended for publishing Kashmir map close to
the one adopted by the U.N. (based on Simla Agreement signed by
India and Pakistan on July 2, 1972) <http://www.un.org/Depts/Cartographic/map/profile/kashmir.pdf>.
I hope you maintain this objective position in your future productions
and that you do not heed the pressure of Indian propaganda to change
the Kashmir map to its own version.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
