Support Microsoft for Publishing Correct Kashmir Map

Certain Indian extremists in America have launched a campaign to protest against an alleged error in the India map published in the Microsoft MapPoint 2002 software. The software depicts Kashmir as a disputed territory, as it is supposed to be.

Thousands of online signatures are being requested at the site, IndiaCause.com, pressuring Microsoft to withdraw its software from the market and 'fix' the Kashmir map to the Indian version, which suggests that Jammu & Kashmir “is an integral part of India”. The website is also demanding the phrase ‘Indian Kashmir’, used to describe the disputed region, be removed.

India’s assertion that Kashmir is part of its sovereign territory and that Pakistan is actually making incursions into this area is not supported by the United Nations. Please refer to Kashmir map on the UN’s website: http://www.un.org/Depts/Cartographic/map/profile/kashmir.pdf

Kashmir belongs neither to Pakistan, nor to India, and its future must be decided by the people of Kashmir themselves. In the last ten years, more than 80,000 Kashmiris have died resisting the 700,000 strong Indian army in Kashmir. This is enough a reason for Microsoft to consider Kashmir a disputed territory on its maps.

Microsoft has done the right thing by publishing Kashmir map close to the one adopted by the U.N. (based on Simla Agreement signed by India and Pakistan on July 2, 1972). Microsoft’s choice to publish an accurate map must be appreciated.
