Action Requested

Contact your local Bar Associations and request them to:

  1. send letters of support and sympathy to the lawyers and judges in Pakistan through Pakistan Bar Council on their organization’s letterhead
  2. demand General Musharraf to immediately release all the lawyers and judges currently held in custody and jails and call for the reinstatement of judiciary
  3. urge President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to pressurize the Pakistani government to restore the independent judiciary. So far they have been silent on this issue, which is crucial to guarantee fair elections.

Talking Points

o- Independence of judiciary is the fundamental element of any state. Without it, elections may not be considered legitimate by Pakistanis and the world which will cause the political crises to deepen.
