Demand the Restoration of Judicial System in Pakistan
For the last eight months Pakistanis are leading an effort to establish the
rule of law in Pakistan. It has given rise to a genuine popular movement of
Pakistanis in Pakistan, led by lawyers, human rights activists, and professionals
in Pakistan.
The summary dismissal of the Chief Justice, suspension of the Constitution,
detention and torture of hundreds of lawyers and judges, ban on media outlets,
and the arrest of opposition leaders by General Pervez Musharraf have created
a constitutional and human rights crisis in Pakistan.
As Pakistani Americans we can support this internal historic movement in a
significant way. Even five minutes a day dedicated to this cause can change
the situation. Demand the return of justice and independent judiciary in Pakistan.
Action Requested
1- Write to President George W. Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and
the Committee on the Judiciary in the Senate to demand immediate restoration
of an independent judicial system in Pakistan.
2- If you represent an organization, please send letters to the above mentioned
parties on your letterhead.
3- Contact your local Bar Associations and request them to formulate ideas to
re-establish access to justice in Pakistan. Also thank American Bar Association
for issuing a statement
of condemnation.
4- Send a message of support and sympathy to the lawyers and judges in Pakistan
through Pakistan Bar Council.
5- Submit any photo or video coverage of the current political and legal crisis
in Pakistan to info@pakjustice.com.
Talking Points
o- Independence of judiciary is fundamental element of a state. It is important
not only for Pakistan and Pakistanis but the citizens and governments of the
world to declare this assault on the judiciary as reprehensible.
o- The Supreme Court and High Court of Pakistan should be allowed to exercise
their constitutional mandate and their power should be restored immediately.
o- We must show solidarity with the Pakistan Bar Council and the countless judges
of superior courts and lawyers who are under arrest, imprisoned, or tortured..
That’s the moral and legal thing to do.
